Harvey, The Wonder Dog who does Everything for You!

16/1/2011

Picture
A rescue dog with its own TV ad is the latest weapon of the commercial television marketing body Thinkbox.

In a 60-second spot set to Bachman-Turner Overdrive's You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, a scruffy mutt called Harvey outwits cuter rivals for the affection of a new owner by showing a video in which he drives a car, cooks and plays chess.

The ad was developed by the agency Red Brick Road and is backed by Thinkbox shareholders including ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and BSkyB. It will start showing on Friday. The spot ends with the line "Discover the power of TV advertising... Television: where brands get their breaks". Thinkbox launched its first ad campaign promoting the medium last year featuring a hypnotherapy patient aping famous lines from commercials. "We have so much evidence proving how effective TV advertising is, but there's nothing quite like seeing it work for yourself, as we did last year, to convince you to have more," said Lindsey Clay, marketing director at Thinkbox. "We hope this new ad will be as well received and successful as our first."

The campaign will run for about six weeks on the TV channels of Thinkbox shareholders – including ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and BSkyB – in paid-for advertising airtime. Media planning and buying has been handled by MediaCom

Robot kid defuses ungushing Fruit Gushers

15/7/2010

Picture
In what is surely the single greatest robot-themed squirting-candy ad ever produced, Saatchi & Saatchi in New York sends forth a cap-wearing, metal-claw-tongued automaton to "defuse" a malfunctioning, non-gushing Fruit Gusher left sitting on a park bench. The bot looks like a cross between a typical class nerd and the uber-evil Davros from Dr. Who: goofy and scary at the same time. The earnest/tongue-in-cheek acting by the bomb-squad types is spot on, and the mother's mock-relieved reaction ("Oh, thank you, robot-child") is especially well delivered. Even knowing that the robo-kid will one day turn on his masters and kill us all can't stop me from gushing over this spot.

Toshiba Laptops and their 8-Bit Gary

14/7/2010

Picture
This neat short film, titled “8-Bit Gary” and directed by Mortar Inc.’s Docter Twins, is ostensibly about the DVD upconversion capabilities of Toshiba laptops, but we know the truth: Really, it just makes you wish that the “8-bitinator” was real. Thanks to the vaguely Capsule Corp.-looking device, a guy named Gary is converted into a pixellated, bleep- and bloop-emitting avatar and then ‘upconverted’ back into a musclebound hunk. Hilarity ensues.

Fun, impressive fact: According to Design Taxi, the 8-bit Gary costume consisted of more than 3,000 hand-cut foam boxes.

Gary Numan and Batteries that Die Hard

Check out this commercial which depicts Gary Numan playing his signature hit "Cars" on 24 vehicles powered by only one battery. You'll either marvel at the technological brilliance of these individually tuned horns, or you'll roll your eyes in skepticism and assume they did everything in post processing.
