Jack Streat went and built himself a fully functional Lee Enfield sniper rifle out of LEGO Technics. And by 'fully functional' I mean the thing can accurately shoot LEGO blocks up to a couple feet. It's definitely not gonna make a terrorist's head explode or anything. Now I'm not saying you could do more damage with a Lincoln Log catapult, but I have eaten a couple LEGO bullets before with little to no damage (they passed just like corn except with a *tink* when they hit the bottom of the bowl). These 8-bit illustrations are made by artist and designer Jude Buffum from Philadelphia. He gets his inspiration from various old school movies, video games, toys and politics.
While programs like Ableton Live have truly democratized electronic music making, most hardware interfaces can't hold a candle style-wise to traditional instruments (or even the MIDI gear of the Awesome 80s). Rather than merely bemoan this depressing fact, however, a musician from Zurich named Zander Ander has built his own controller -- and it's truly a thing of beauty. Based on the uCApps.de MIDI hardware platform, this thing employs custom acrylic knobs, colored LEDs, and a whole bunch of buttons to bring his DAW controls into the real world -- while kicking the ass of controllers like AKAI's APC40 in the process. But don't take our word for it! Check it out for yourself after the break. Aviary has made a name for itself by offering creative types free, Web-based tools like image editors and color palette generators. Not long ago, it got into the audio editing game with Myna, a simple but functional tool for recording and tweaking sound. Now the company is expanding its music creation lineup with 'Roc,' a basic sequencing app for creating loops. 'Music Creator,' as it's officially known (although you'll see it called by its codename 'Roc' just as often), is an extremely basic app. It has a selection of pre-programed "instruments" that you can load into the sequencer. Individual sounds from each instrument can be added to the sequencer in any combination you want, but you can't load multiple instruments. This probably wouldn't be too big of an issue if it weren't for the fact that "instruments" in Roc are simply sample packs. This means melodic instruments (like guitar and bass) are limited by the number of samples that can be loaded at once. In this case, it's 12, so you're constrained to a single octave's worth of notes or chords. Illustrator Christopher Uminga has me in awe of his talent. He’s created an amazing series of superhero/Star Wars/Ninja Turtles/etc. pictures in his own unique art style, and they’re the coolest things I’ve seen in quite some time. We’ve got the full gallery for you below and be sure to click on any of the pictures to make them huge with the help of our brand new gallery page! Hooray, we’ve made it into the 21st century!
An exploration of how the digital world allows many Iranians access to ideas and freedom of expression they haven't had for close to thirty years. Blogging is, in essence, a means of revolution. Koch is a project developed by Jean-Baptiste Di Marco as a crossover between audio-visual practices. Koch - Ouverture introduces a progressive audio-visual narrative influenced by a VJing practice and experimental cinema. This video is representing one possibility and one step of a data based / loop based narrative. Koch - Ouverture will be shown as an audio-visual performance from the 14th to the 18th of July 2010 in Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. A movie about Second Life and gaming is screening at this year's prestigious Cannes Film Festival, which opens today. The name of the film is R U There, a Dutch/French production partly shot in Taipei, and partly in Second Life. It's about a professional gamer who falls in love with a beautiful Taiwanese girl, who invites him to deepen their relationship in the metaverse. Check out the immensely stylish trailer, which sort of suggests Wong Kar-Wai meets CounterStrike. Brief excerpt of ASIMO in a Frankfurt lab learning to recognise objects and determine object families. ASIMO is not an autonomous robot. It can't enter a room and make decisions on its own about how to navigate. ASIMO either has to be programmed to do a specific job in a specific area that has markers that it understands, or it has to be manually controlled by a human. A must see video! Macro photography is also known as close-up photography. Macro photography means that the image on film is approximately the same size as the subject. It is a type of photography that reveals details which can’t be seen with the naked eye. While we can see a fly on the wall, our eyes are not appointed to make out the fine details of the hairs on its face. It gives us a glimpse into the world of the very small, which goes unnoticed as we hurriedly shuffle through our day. In this showcase, I’ve collected some beautiful macro photos.
